SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team started off their dual season with a solid win over the Cal State Fullerton Titans. With the 6-1 win, the Toreros extend their all-time series record against the Titans to 18-3.
In doubles play, the Toreros got off to a quick lead. First-year Toreros junior Dana Oppinger and freshman Drew Spinosa, who are now 4-1 as a pair, knocked off Titans' Camille De Leon and Megan Sanford 6-1. Junior duo Marta Stojanovic and Shani Blecher soon followed with a victory over Fullerton's Alexis Valenzuela and Danielle Pham 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
The Toreros wasted no time in extending their lead to 3-0. Spinosa picked up her first dual season win in her collegiate career dominating Titans' Danielle Pham 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Stojanovic, who started off the season at the No.1 spot for the first time in her collegiate career, took full advantage. Stojanovic defeated Fullerton sophomore De Leon 6-1, 6-1 as well.
The Titans eventually answered the Toreros with a win at the No. 6 spot. This win would be the only Fullerton victory of the day as Oppinger answered right back with a victory over Emilia Burkowksi 6-3, 6-3. Oppinger's first win in dual season play as a Torero would also clinch the match.
The remaining Toreros battled out their matches. Blecher picked up a win over Titans' Megan Sanford 6-3, 6-4, while junior Mikayla Morkel-Brink finished the day on a high note defeating Michelle Erasmus 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The Toreros return to action for another home match against Hawai'i, February 12th, at 1:30 p.m. - PT at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
