RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The No. 32 University of San Diego men’s tennis team wrapped up day one of their series of hidden dual match competition this evening at the Morgan Run Club & Resort tennis facility in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Unfortunately, the Toreros were unable to gain any momentum against opponents hailing from No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 14 Notre Dame, and No. 15 California.
The day commenced with doubles play, which proved to be an uphill battle for the Toreros. Texas A&M’s Harrison Adams and Shane Visant took down sophomore Filip Vittek and junior Uros Petronijevic 6-3. Junior Romain Kalaydjian and sophomore Alexandros Araouzos, who went 1-1 in the fall, were neck and neck in their contest. Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar of Notre Dame managed to edge out the pair in a tiebreaker 7-6(3). Covalschi and Hagar are currently tabbed at No. 9 in the nation. Senior Ciaran Fitzgerald and freshman James Ponwith dropped their first match as well, falling to Cal’s Filip Bergevi and Mads Engsted.
Dealing with some injuries throughout the team, only six Toreros competed in singles – three out of the six against ranked opponents. No. 37 Quentin Monaghan of the Irish defeated Petronijevic 6-4, 6-4, while Vittek dropped his match to UC Berkley’s 93rd-ranked Filip Bergevi 6-4, 6-2. After a close tiebreaker from at the No. 3 spot, Kalaydjian later fell to Texas A&M’s 96th-ranked Jeremy Efferding 7-6(2), 6-1.
The Toreros look to bounce back tomorrow as they resume competition at 10:30 a.m. – PT.
