SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD men's soccer team (5-4-2, 1-0-0) kicked off WCC play with a convincing 3-1 win over Loyola Marymount Friday evening in front of over 1,000 fans at Torero Stadium. USD scored two goals in the first 16 minutes and then added one more late in the match; LMU scored their lone goal on a penalty kick in the 81st minute. The win snapped a three match losing streak to the Lions.

In the seventh minute, Michael Turner corralled the ball on the left wing and slipped a pass inside the box to Djordje Babic despite being flanked by two LMU defenders. Babic hit a one-timer with his left foot inside the left post to give USD an early 1-0 lead.

Turner's great evening continued nine minutes later when he scored his first goal of the season. After a Babic corner kick, the ball came to Turner in a crowded box and he unleashed a rocket left-footer that went over the head of the leaping LMU keeper.

The Toreros had another goal-scoring opportunity in the 31st minute when Babic launched a shot from 22 yards out that the LMU goalie made a diving save to tap the ball up and over the crossbar to set up a USD corner. The Toreros finished the first half with an 8-5 shot advantage.

Turner and Babic nearly connected again in the 58th minute when Turner backflipped to Babic inside the box, but he had his shot saved by LMU's Paul Blanchette.

The Toreros added to their total in the 79th minute when Torrey DeArmas found himself in a one-v-one situation after a through ball from Patrick McGrath. DeArmas calmly placed the ball past the keeper into the left side of the net for his third goal of the season.

The Lions cracked the scoreboard in the 81st minute on a penalty kick. Torero keeper Thomas Olsen got his fingers on it, but it skipped past him to erase USD's hopes of a shutout.

The Torero defense was strong all evening and didn't allow a LMU shot on goal until the 75th minute. USD outshot the Lions 20-12 and had four corner kicks to LMU's one.

Olsen had two saves and picked up his fifth win of the season. LMU's Paul Blanchette corralled seven saves, but was saddled with the loss.

The Toreros return to action next week with two home WCC matches. On Friday they host Portland at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday they host Gonzaga, who entered the weekend with the highest RPI rank in the WCC, at 2:00 p.m.
