SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Saint Mary's College Friday evening in a West Coast Conference match at Torero Stadium.
The Gaels (7-6-3, 2-2-1 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as in the 13th minute of action, Kiana Quarles took control of the ball near mid field, then sent a cross pass to Samantha Dion, and Dion took a few touches to get through the USD defense, and fired off a shot from 18 yards out that went into the back of the net, to give SMC the early 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, USD (3-10-2, 1-2-0 WCC) scored the equalizer. Jacqueline Altschuld took the ball near the 35 yard line, sent a pass to Maddie Marotta, she then fired off a shot. The ball bounced off the goalkeepers chest, then went behind her, and Julianne De Armas was there to head the ball in from the far post into an empty goal, moving the score to 1-1.
SMC then scored the game-winner in the 28th minute of action. Samantha Dion sent a cross into the goalbox, where Hannah Diaz then redirected the ball into the back of the net, to put the match at its final of 2-1.
USD was outshot 10-8, but did hold an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
