Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The USD men's soccer team (7-4-2, 3-0-0) won their third straight WCC match Sunday afternoon, knocking off Gonzaga 3-1 for their third consecutive match with three goals. Dating back to last season, USD has won nine of their last ten WCC contests.

The Zags nearly grabbed an early lead in the 11th minute when USD goalkeeper Thomas Olsen was caught off the back line and Gonzaga's Ben White had a shot at an open net. However, Ryan Camara, who was making his first start of the season, deflected the ball away to keep the match scoreless.

The Toreros scored their first goal in the 35th minute when Patrick McGrath headed the ball backwards from the end line to Djordje Babic, who played a left footer inside the near post. It was Babic's fourth goal on the season, tying him for second on the team.

Keegan Smith scored his team-high fifth goal of the year in the 53rd minute on a penalty kick. Gonzaga keeper Ben Lowrimore dove to his right and Smith calmly placed the ball in the opposite lower corner.

The Toreros added to their total in the 64th minute when Smith and Darragh Vieyra strung together a couple nice passes to set up Michael Turner, who finished in the upper left corner to put USD up 3-0.

The Zags got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute when Jakob Granlund scored from the 25 yards out on the left wing. His shot deflected off a Torero defender and Olsen couldn't react in time.

The Bulldogs had many opportunities via corner kick, totaling 12, but couldn't convert. Gonzaga finished with 13 shots to the Toreros' 11.

Thomas Olsen had four saves and picked up his seventh win of the season. He now has 17 career wins, tying him with Joe Panian (1994-97) for sixth most in program history.

Gonzaga keeper Ben Lowrimore entered the match with the lowest goals allowed average in the WCC, but surrendered three goals to suffer his seventh loss of the season.

There are no conference matches next week, but the Toreros will play at Lipscomb (Nashville, Tenn.) Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.
