SPOKANE, Wash. â€" The University of San Diego women's soccer team (3-8-2, 1-1-0 WCC) suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Gonzaga University (2-6-4, 1-1-0 WCC) Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at Martin Field.
After the two teams battled to a scoreless first half, the Zags were able to get on the scoreboard first. In the 54th minute of action, Jodi Ulkekul took a shot from the far right wing of the goal box, and the ball sailed into the top right corner of the goal, to give GU a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then went on the offensive attack, and in the 74th minute of play, Julia Sherwood took a corner kick for the Toreros, as she skied the ball into a crowded goal box, where the GU defense took control of the ball, then sent it into the USD goal for an own goal, moving the score to 1-1.
Then late in the second half, the Zags managed to slip in another goal, as in the 82nd minute of play, Karley Baggerly dribbled through the USD defense and slid the ball into the goal, to put the match at its final of 2-1.
The Zags out shot the Toreros 15-9, while San Diego held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
McKenna Tollack was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed two goals and recorded four saves. GU's Christie Tombari was credited with the win, as she allowed one goal and recorded three saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they travel to Provo, Utah to take on the defending WCC champion and sixth-raked BYU Cougars in a 6 p.m. WCC match.
