Lawrence's Career Day Paces USD Past Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. â€" Behind a career-high 453 passing yards from redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Lawrence, the University of San Diego football team cruised to a 47-16 Pioneer Football League victory over Stetson University Saturday afternoon at Spec Martin Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 6-2 overall, and move to 4-1 in PFL games to remain in the hunt for the league championship. With the loss, the Hatters fall to 2-6 overall and move to 1-5 in the PFL.

Lawrence's 453 yards is the second most single-game passing yards in USD history, only trailing Mason Mills' record of 511. Lawrence completed 20 of 28 passes and tossed three touchdowns. Behind Lawrence's strong arm, USD racked up 644 yards of total offense, which is also second all-time at USD, trailing only a 663-yard performance against Marist back in 2003.

On the receiving end of Lawrence was Brian Riley, who also had a career day with 177 yards of receiving, on six receptions and he scored one touchdown. Justin Priest was the second USD receiver with a 100 yard day, recording 107 yards on four receptions. Matthew Cecil led the Torero ground attack with 91 yards of rushing and one touchdown. Taylor Bongiovanni paced the USD defense with six tackles, and 2.5 sacks, while Alec Moreno had seven tackles and Nic Hensen added in six more tackles.

USD outgained the Hatters 644-280, and the Toreros recorded 191 rushing yards to Stetson's 177. The Toreros had double the amount of first downs then Stetson at 24-12.

For Stetson, quarterback Ryan Tentler recorded 89 yards of passing on 13-of-26 passing attempts, while also leading the team in rushing with 107 yards on seven carries. Ja'Vonta Swinton led the receiving corps for the Hatters with 31 yards on seven receptions, and defensively, Donald Payne led the way with seven tackles and 2.5 sacks.

San Diego will return to action on Saturday, as they host Campbell in a 12 p.m. PFL game inside the friendly confines of Toreros Stadium, where USD currently holds a 21-game home PFL winning streak.
