LOS ANGELES, Calif â€" The USD Men's Basketball team opened their season on Friday night at USC. The Toreros fell to the Trojans by a final score of 83-45.

Senior guard Duda Sanadze led the team in scoring with 12 points on 14 shots. Nine other Toreros scored in the game including four freshmen. Freshman guard Olin Carter III had eight points and also led the team with seven rebounds.

In Head Coach Lamont Smith's debut, the Toreros did not get the ball to bounce their way.

"It was one of those games where the ball didn't go into the basket." Smith said. "I think we were a little wide-eyed tonight. Hopefully we can shake that off."

The Toreros did improve after the first half, which ended with the USD trailing 42-19. In the second half the team shot better from the floor while holding USC to a lower shooting-percentage. Senior center Jito Kok helped guard the rim and recorded four blocks against the Trojans.

Coach Smith emphasized the need for his young team to learn and grow from this game quickly.

"We've got to be able to create baskets for each other by screening and cutting and doing some of those things. I told them about the beauty of college basketball here in the locker-room, that we've got to wash it off, we have a game on Tuesday."

The Toreros will be in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Tuesday to face the Western Michigan Broncos. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
