SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 35 University of San Diego men's tennis team continued their hot streak defeating the No. 18 (Div. II) UC San Diego Tritons and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos Saturday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. This was the Toreros' second double-header of the season and fifth-straight win. The Toreros defeated UCSD 5-2, while narrowly edging out UCSB 4-3. Furthermore, doubles tandem junior Jordan Angus and sophomore Filip Vittek ride a four-match winning streak as well at the No. 1 spot.

The Toreros would have a slow start in the morning, dropping a match at the No. 1 spot against the Tritons. After great volleys from sophomore Patrick Hall, the Toreros soon equalized at the No. 3 spot. Angus and sophomore Alexandros Araouzos clinched the point for the Toreros, defeating UCSD's Alexandre Miaule and Horea Porutiu 6-3.

In singles play, senior Ciaran Fitzgerald extended the Torero lead to 2-0 after cruising past UC San Diego's Rajeev Hereker 6-1, 6-1. Junior Romain Kalaydjian, who played at the No. 2 spot against the Tritons, competed strong against UCSD's Eric Tseng picking up a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Needing one more match to clinch, the Toreros' 70th-ranked Vittek came through and won in straight sets.

The Tritons were able to grab the remaining matches after a tight two-set loss at the No. 5 spot, while freshman James Ponwith fell 6
-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Later in the afternoon, the Toreros faced a very determined Santa Barbara squad. Although the Toreros' doubles performance stayed solid, the Gauchos came out the gate both hungry and ready for singles.

With battles on every court, Santa Barbara's Teague Hamilton equalized the score for the Gauchos defeating Fitzgerald 6-4, 6-3. The battle would continue for the Toreros, with four of the remaining five matches going to third sets.

No. 70 Vittek answered back for the Toreros and defeated Gauchos' Morgan Mays 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Vittek has currently won six straight matches in singles.

After dropping a third-set decision at the No. 1 spot, the Gauchos would take their lead to 3-2 as Kalaydjian fell to UCSB's Nathan Eshmade 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

While the finish line was close for the Gauchos, the Toreros would not down easy. Angus came back from a set down to defeat Cody Rakela at the No. 3 spot 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and brought the team score at 3-3.

Sophomore Geoffrey Fosso, who is no stranger to clinching victories, prevailed in his three-set match to secure the win for the Toreros. Fosso defeated Andrew Riminton 6-2, 6-7 (7-3), 6-1.

"Tough match today," head coach Brett Masi expressed. "I felt we were a little on edge going into singles after playing another great doubles point. Our doubles is clicking right now and hopefully we can keep that up. In our singles we need to start being more aggressive and maintain focus. UCSB played a great match and had us on the ropes. They are a good team and we are lucky we got through that. All in all it was a good day winning two more matches. We are match tough and will be well-equipped for Pacific next weekend."
