SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (1-8, 0-2 WCC) struggled in conference play this weekend dropping their second match on the road versus the Santa Clara Broncos Sunday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos managed to pull away in tight sets, giving their squad the momentum to take the match.
Newly-partnered junior Shani Blecher and sophomore Janine Koleta cruised past Santa Clara's Zeina El Tawil and Riley Morgan 6-1 in doubles play. While doubles competition has been the Toreros' strong suit thus far, minor injuries on the squad gave the Broncos an advantage the remainder of the match. The Broncos' answered with a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot over junior Dana Oppinger and freshman Drew Spinosa. Santa Clara later clinched after Chelby Cooke and Delphine Rouvillois edged juniors Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink 6-4.
After the Broncos extended their lead with a victory at the No. 4 spot, Oppinger dropped a two-set decision to Santa Clara's Nabila Farah 6-1, 6-1.
Leading 3-0, the Broncos clinched as Spinosa competed in a hard-fought battle, narrowly falling to Daniella Silva 6-4, 6-4.
Both Stojanovic and Morkel-Brink lost in close contests as well. Santa Clara's Delphine Rouvillois defeated Stojanovic 6-4, 7-5, while Morkel-Brink fell 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(5).
The Toreros' lone point of the day would come at the No. 6 spot. Koleta prevailed in a tight three-set victory over Broncos' Danielle Zinn 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(6).
The Toreros return to action in their third conference match-up against No. 16 Pepperdine on Wednesday, March 25th at 1:30 p.m. - PT.
