SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego women's tennis team (2-9, 1-3 WCC) battled past the Loyola Marymount Lions Sunday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. Following an impressive doubles performance, the Toreros pulled out crucial three-set matches to defeat the Lions 4-3.
The Toreros went back to their winning ways as doubles commenced -- clinching the point quickly. Juniors Mikayla Morkel-Brink and Marta Stojanovic came out solid, comfortably defeating Lions' Jessica Perez and Anna Romeka 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. Doubles tandem junior Dana Oppinger and freshman Drew Spinosa would secure the point in similar fashion, taking down to Loyola Marymount's Lisa Piller and Ellie Grossman 6-0. Sophomores Marisa Marsh and Janine Koleta were neck and neck at 3-2 when doubles play was stopped.
The Lions would claim the first singles point of the day at the No. 6 spot. Loyola Marymount's Lisa Piller defeated Marsh in a two-set decision. The Lions followed that up with a second victory at the No. 4 spot as Ellie Grossman knocked off Morkel-Brink 6-2, 6-3. Stojanovic got the Toreros back on track getting a thrilling win over LMU's Jessica Perez 6-1, 7-6(5) to equalize the match.
The remaining matches became nothing less than a battle, all going into third sets. Although dropping the first set, Oppinger bounced back to defeat Lions' Anna Romeka 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. With the match at 3-2, Spinosa was in a tight contest against LMU's Andrea Crespo. Picking up her first-career conference singles victory, Spinosa triumphed and clinched the match in three sets.
With the match decided, Lions' Julia Norlin narrowly ousted Koleta 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.
The Toreros return to action up north as they take on more conference opponents. The squad will face the St. Mary's Gaels and Pacific Tigers on April 3-4th.
