SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego women's tennis team (3-12, 2-5 WCC) competed in yet another nail-biting contest Sunday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros stayed mentally tough in singles to outlast the Gonzaga Bulldogs (11-7, 2-5 WCC) 4-3. Junior Shani Blecher would clinch for the Toreros for the first time this season, ousting Bulldogs' Melanie Yates 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs got the Toreros on their heels straight out of the gate. Gonzaga's Katie Edwards and Samantha Polayes knocked off junior Dana Oppinger and Drew Spinosa 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Although juniors Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink were neck and neck in their set, the Bulldogs clinched after a victory at the No. 3 spot. The Bulldogs' Kylie Peek and Franziska Koehler defeated junior Shani Blecher and sophomore Janine Koleta 6-2.

With a long battle ahead of them, the Toreros were hungrier than ever. While Gonzaga extended their lead after a victory at the No. 6 spot, Stojanovic answered -- triumphing over Bulldogs' Samantha Polayes 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Stojanovic's win would shift the momentum as Oppinger equalized the match picking up a victory at the No. 3 spot. The German defeated Gonzaga's Alex Bourguignon 6-1, 6-4.

Spinosa came up with a solid victory to take the lead for the first time. The freshman grabbed her first No. 1 singles victory, taking down Gonzaga's Katie Edwards in straight sets. Although the sets were tight, Gonzaga's Kylie Peek managed to answer for the Bulldogs narrowly edging Morkel-Brink in a 7-5, 6-4 decision at the No. 4 spot.

The match would come down to court 5 as Blecher competed in her first deciding match of the season. While Gonzaga's Melanie Yates converted a tight second set, Blecher prevailed -- defeating Yates 6-4 ,4-6, 6-3 to solidify the Torero victory.

The Toreros plan to carry this momentum into the remainder of the season. The squad returns to action this Wednesday, April 15th against cross-town foe San Diego State. The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. -- PT at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
