SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego women's tennis team (2-12, 1-5 WCC) endured a heartbreaking loss Thursday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. With four of the six singles matches going into third sets, it was clear the Toreros left it all on the court. However, the No.55-ranked Portland Pilots managed to narrowly pull away with the victory over the Toreros 4-3.

The Toreros went back to their winning ways as doubles began. Juniors Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink picked up the first point of the day after a 6-3 victory over Portland's Maja Mladenovic and Sophie Van den Aarssen. Neck and neck at the No. 1 spot, junior Dana Oppinger and freshman Drew Spinosa edged the Pilot pair of Lucia Butkovska and Jelena Lazarevic 7-5 to secure the doubles point.

In singles play, the Toreros quickly proved they were prepared to battle it out to the end. Although the Pilots picked up a point at the No. 5 spot, Morkel-Brink won her second match in a row to take the lead for the Toreros after a straight-set win.

The remaining matches would all go to three sets. While Stojanovic came back to take the second set, Portland's Maja Mladenovic later prevailed -- grabbing a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-0 victory. Oppinger got the Toreros back on track coming back from a set down and defeating Pilots' Sophie Van den Aarssen 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. At 3-2, the Pilots' Tori Troesch captured her third set as well, knocking off sophomore Janine Koleta 7-5, 5-7, 6-0.

The deciding match would come down to Spinosa and Pilots' Lucia Butkovska. Butkovska has only dropped one dual match this season. After coming back from a set down, Spinosa found herself in a down-to-the-wire third set. Butkovska managed to oust Spinosa in the tiebreaker, clinching the victory for the Pilots 4-3.

The Toreros return to action this Sunday, April 12th against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. -- PT.
