BOULDER, Colo. â€" After trailing two sets to one, the University of San Diego women's volleyball team rallied for a 3-2 victory over the University of Oklahoma at the Omni Hotels Classic hosted by the University of Colorado on Saturday morning. The Toreros improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Sooners fall to 0-2.
Oklahoma's one-set advantage heading to the fourth came from sets scores of 26-24, 20-25 and 25-18. The two sides traded runs in the second with San Diego finishing the set on a 12-5 run to tie the match at a set apiece. The Sooners went up a set with three kills in the final four points of the third from Micaela Spann.
In the fourth, it was another big run from USD that pushed the set in its favor. After the Toreros burned a timeout down 18-15, three consecutive kills by Canace Finley sparked a 10-1 Torero run to close out the frame, and force a fifth and deciding set. San Diego jumped out to an early lead in the fifth before Oklahoma got within a point at 7-6, but that was the closest it would get, as a Finley kill sparked an 8-4 Torero run to close things out and complete the come-from-behind victory.
Finley led all players with a career-high 18 kills to go with seven digs and five blocks for the Toreros. She was joined in double figures by Lisa Kramer (12 kills) and Merve Tanyel (11 kills). Kristen Gengenbaucher recorded her first double-double of the season with 24 assists and 14 digs, while Hunter Jennings recorded a season-high 18 digs to pace the USD defense. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Fuller had a near double-double with nine kills and 12 digs, and Lauren Schad had a team-best six blocks. As a team, USD hit .143, while Oklahoma hit .173.
Kierra Holst led the Sooners with 13 kills. Spann and Kimmy Gardiner each tallied 10 kills. Gardiner registered OU's first double-double of the season as she added 15 digs as well as three service aces. Spann led all players with nine blocks as Oklahoma totaled 14 to San Diego's 12.
The Toreros will return to action later this afternoon at 4:30, when they take on No. 9 Florida State.
