Toreros Play UC Irvine to 1-1 Draw

Sept. 11, 2015

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The Torero men's soccer team (2-1-2) tied UC Irvine 1-1 Friday evening at Torero Stadium. After both teams scored in the first ten minutes, neither squad could find the back of the net for the final 100 minutes. It was an extremely physical match which featured over 30 fouls, 12 cards, and both teams ended the match with only 10 players on the field.

The Anteaters scored early after a defensive miscue by the Toreros. A USD defender made a dangerous pass back to goalkeeper Thomas Olsen, who had to rush to clear the ball. His kick was deflected by an oncoming UCI striker and landed at Ivan Canales' feet, who chipped it over Olsen from the right wing to give Irvine a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.

The Toreros wasted no time avenging the costly goal. Less than four minutes later, on USD's first corner kick of the evening, Djordje Babic placed his kick to the near post, which Keegan Smith headed in to tie it up at 1-1. It was Smith's team-leading third goal on the season.

The first half ended quietly with each squad having five shots and no cards. However, the second half would be a much different story.

The Toreros put the pressure on the Anteaters in the second frame and had multiple opportunities to take the lead. In the 62nd minute, senior midfielder Darragh Vieyra sent a rocket into the top right corner of the goal from 30 yards out. However, the Toreros were called for being offsides and the goal was called off.

The Toreros lost Parker Price, one of their most reliable defenders, in the 76th minute, when he picked up his second yellow card, forcing USD to play a man down. However, the Toreros caught a break when Irvine's Luis Leon picked up two yellow cards in a three minute span shortly after to earn himself a red card. Before his exit, Leon had a team-high four shots for the Anteaters.

With the teams playing 10 on 10, the match picked up the pace and opened up. Torrey DeArmas had a chance for a late game-winner when he received a nice cross from Marvin Schmiege in the 88th minute, but missed wide.

In the second extra time period, Schmiege almost landed a beautiful shot from 20 yards out, but UCI's Michael Breslin made a jumping save to tap the ball up and over the crossbar.

The Toreros outshot UC Irvine 15-7 in the second half and extra time. Schmiege led the Toreros with five shots; DeArmas and Michael Turner each had four.

Thomas Olsen (2-1-2) had four saves and his counterpart, Michael Breslin, collected five.

The Toreros return to action on Sunday when they host SIU Edwardsville at 12:00 p.m. The Cougars played San Diego State to a 0-0 draw Friday evening.
