Sept. 17, 2015 Box Score
SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's soccer team (1-6-1) scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of a furious comeback attempt, but it wasn't enough, as USD dropped a 4-3 decision to cross-town rival San Diego State University (4-2-0) Thursday evening in a non-conference match at the Sports Deck.
Trailing 4-1 with 27 minutes remaining in the game, most teams would have packed it in and given up. Not the Toreros. USD went to work. Over the final 27 minutes of action, the Toreros out worked the Aztecs, and put on one of the greatest comeback attempts in recent memory. In the 82nd minute, Julia Sherwood took a corner kick for the Toreros, and the ball bounced around a very crowded goal box, where finally, Sherwood was able to flick the ball to Danielle Gonzales, and she finished the job, scoring USD's second goal of the game, moving the score to 4-2, much to the disbelief of the SDSU players and fans.
Then just four minutes later, USD junior midfielder Jacqueline Altschuld had most of the SDSU defense beat, and the Aztecs committed a foul, tripping Altschuld in the goal box, setting up a penalty kick situation. Altschuld then easily drilled the ball into the lower left side of the goal to cut the deficit to one at 4-3.
USD then had a few more chances to tie the match, with the best scoring opportunity coming off another corner kick. This time the ball skied to Gonzales, and she headed the ball, but it hit the crossbar then went behind the goal, much to the relief of the Aztecs. USD just could not get any closer, as they simply ran out of time.
After the two teams battled to a scoreless first half, the Aztecs managed to get on the scoreboard first. In the 49th minute of play, Aliya Utush took control of the ball, and sent a cross to about the four yard line, where Hedda Regefalk was able to get her foot on the ball, and score the goal, giving SDSU a 1-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, the Aztecs doubled their lead, as Utush sent a pass to Leah Pruitt, who was able to stick the ball into the back of the net, moving the score to 2-0.
After SDSU scored a third goal in the 59th minute of play, USD was able to get on the scoreboard. Maggie Ghotbi slipped past the SDSU defense on the right side of the field, and sent a cross into the goal box, where Victoria Walker was able to redirect the ball into the back of the net, to score her third goal of the season, and move the score to 3-1.
SDSU then scored one more goal in the 63rd minute to go up 4-1, which set up the thrilling finish to the match.
The Aztecs outshot the Toreros, 14-11, and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Michelle Craft was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed two goals and recorded two saves. SDSU's Vaughn picked up the win, as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they return to the friendly confines of Torero Stadium to host Oregon State University in a 1 p.m. non-conference.
