Toreros Rally Falls Short against CSUN

Sept. 25, 2015

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Torero men's soccer team (4-3-2) fell to CSUN 1-0 Friday evening at Torero Stadium. It was USD's second time being shutout this season and the loss snapped their two match winning streak.

The Matadors scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute, but the Toreros had a chance to tie it in the 86th minute with a penalty kick opportunity, but couldn't convert. The Matadors now have three straight wins over WCC teams.

The match was tightly-contested throughout the evening. In the first half, neither team had a great opportunity, but the Toreros had a decent look in the 39th minute. Parker Price flicked a ball to Djordje Babic, who had a nice shot from 20 yards out, but CSUN's keeper, Adam Hobbs made a diving stop to his left.

The Matadors didn't have a shot until the 25th minute, but had their first threat in the 52nd minute when Jeremy Degraffenreidt sent a shot in from the right wing that was stopped by a nice save by Thomas Olsen.

CSUN cracked the scoreboard in the 66th minute. Jumoke Hutton received a pass down the right sideline and appeared to be offsides. After no whistle from the official, he sent a cross in that found Carlos Gonzalez's head. The ball deflected off Olsen's hands and into the top right corner of the net.

In the 70th minute, Gustav Brandt sent a free kick in from the left wing and Connor O'Neill had a header that missed wide left.

The Toreros' best opportunity came in the 86th minute after Marvin Schmiege was tackled from behind in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick. CSUN's Hobbs blocked Schmiege's PK with a diving stop to his right. The ball deflected in front of the goal, but Hobbs dove on to the ball before Schmiege could get a foot on it.

The Toreros finished with 13 shots to CSUN's eight and put six on frame. Thomas Olsen had three saves but took the loss.

The Toreros return to action on Sunday when they play at UC Santa Barbara (4-3-1) at 6:00 p.m. The Gauchos beat UCLA 4-2 earlier in the week, but fell to Akron at home 2-0 Friday evening.
