SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior midfielder Julia Sherwood's third goal of the season lifted the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 West Coast Conference win over Gonzaga University Saturday evening at Torero Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-6-1 overall, and move to 3-2-0 in the WCC. With the loss, the Zags fall to 4-7-2 overall, and 0-4-0 in the WCC.
In the 43rd minute of action, Rachel Conners took control of the ball just inside the goal box, and dribbled the ball to the right, then sent a cross to Summer Mason, and Mason tapped the ball over to Sherwood, who then headed the ball into the back of the net, to give USD the 1-0 victory.
USD out shot the Zags 10-9, but the Bulldogs did hold a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Amber Michel picked up the win in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed no goals and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, Sarah Swanson, was saddled with the loss for the Zags, as she allowed one goal and recorded one save.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they host BYU in a 7 p.m. WCC match at Torero Stadium.
