Des Moines, IA -- The USD Toreros turned in an impressive performance today on the road at Drake University as they dealt the Bulldogs a 38-7 loss. The victory was USD's fourth straight, all coming in league play. San Diego (5-1, 4-0 PFL) totaled 467 yards of offense while the Torero defense limited the Bulldogs to just 229 yards of offense, including only 42 yards on the ground.
The Toreros played a near perfect first half in jumping out to a 24-0 lead. San Diego totaled 283 yards (103 rush, 180 pass) while the USD defense held the host Bulldogs to just 84 yards of offense (23 on the ground). Anthony Lawrence completed 14-of-20 passes for 180 yards and two scores. Running back Jonah Hodges netted 81 yards on 17 carries. Brian Riley hauled in 4 balls for 67 yards including his 17-yard TD reception on USD's opening drive. Tight end Ross Dwelley caught 4 balls for 47 yards including his 8-yard TD catch in the endzone with 2:36 to go in the half. Fullback Tevin Heyward scored on a 2-yard run with 10:58 to go in the 2nd quarter and Patrick Murray converted on a 44-yard field goal as time expired for the 24-0 score.
To start the second half Drake (3-4, 2-2 PFL) was moving the ball on their opening drive before LB Alec Moreno intercepted a Grant Kraemer pass and returned it 22 yards to the Drake 47 yard line. USD's Hodges opened with a 26-yard run and then Lawrence found TE Ross Dwelley in the endzone on the next play for a 21-yard TD strike and a 31-0 lead at the 12:56 mark of the 3rd quarter. Lawrence and WR Brian Riley would connect for a second time with 3 minutes left in the period, this time from 14 yards out for a 38-0 cushion. The rest of the game the Torero reserves would get some quality minutes of action to close out the game.
Drake got on the scoreboard for the first and only time with 7:38 to go in the game. Running back Drew Lauer found a seam on the left side and sprinted in from 9 yards out for the Bulldogs. For the game, Drake was paced by QB Grant Kraemer who finished 10-29 for 116 yards, and LB Taylor Coleman (8 tackles).
For the game Lawrence completed 19-of-29 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Jonah Hodges finished with 112 yards rushing on 21 carries. Wide receiver Brian Riley pulled in 7 receptions for 116 yards and two scores (17, 14) and TE Ross Dwelley caught 5 balls for 68 yards and two scores (8, 21). Defensively the Toreros were paced by safety Colton Giorgi with 5 tackles (4 solo). Senior CB Jamal Agnew chipped in with 4 stops and 2 pass breakups. Four Toreros were credited with a quarterback sack -- Jacob Bergstrom, Spencer Hammitt, Connor Spencer and Nic Henson. USD punter Jack Flatau had two of his four punts land inside the Drake 10-yard line that helped the Torero defense and eventually give the Torero offense good field position.
Up next for the Toreros is a home contest against the Valparaiso Crusaders on Saturday, October 22nd. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium. USD owns a 25-game home PFL winning streak.
