PORTLAND, Ore. â€" The USD men's soccer team (5-7-3, 2-3-0) was shutout 4-0 at Portland Sunday afternoon. The first place Pilots' (11-3-1, 5-0-0) were led by Benji Michel's two first half goals as USD lost their third consecutive match.
The Pilots jumped out to an early lead when Michel finished an Eddie Sanchez assist in the 11th minute. Michel and Sanchez connected again in the 28th minute on a Michel rocket from 15 yards out. Michel leads the WCC with ten goals.
The Pilots had 12 first half shots, with five coming on goal, to USD's four.
Portland extended their lead in the 76th minute when Rey Ortiz finished an Erik Edwardson cross inside the right post.
Ortiz scored once more in the 89th minute when he converted a penalty kick, bringing the score to 4-0.
The Pilots outshot USD 15-10, putting nine on goal, while the Toreros had three shots on goal. Senior Jared Hegardt was issued a red card in the 86th minute and will miss the Toreros' next match.
After winning their first two conference matches, the Toreros have now lost their last three. They will look to snap their losing streak on Wednesday when they host Cal State Fullerton (7:00 p.m.) in a non-conference match.
