LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Behind two second half goals, the USD men's soccer team (4-4-3, 1-0-0) rallied to beat LMU 2-1 Sunday afternoon. Patrick McGrath scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to give USD the win in their first conference match of the season.
After a scoreless first half where both teams had four shots, the Lions (6-6-0, 0-1-0) broke the tie with a 50th minute unassisted goal from Grant Sampson after he intercepted a pass intended for the USD goalkeeper Thomas Olsen.
The Toreros responded in the 73rd minute when Jared Hegardt scored his first goal as a Torero. Patrick McGrath sent a cross in and Hegardt, the Santa Clara transfer, volleyed the ball over the Lions keeper for the equalizer.
McGrath scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute after receiving a pass from Djordje Babic from the back line. Babic juked the charging goalkeeper then sent a pass through a LMU defender's legs to McGrath, who chose bounced in off the crossbar. Babic has a team-high four assists on the season.
The Toreros had 13 shots to LMU's ten and both teams had five shots on goal. The Toreros had six corners, while LMU had four.
USD goalkeeper Thomas Olsen (3-3-3) had four saves to pick up his 23rd career win.
After playing six straight road matches, the Toreros return home Friday night when they host Saint Mary's at 7:00 p.m.
