SAN FRANCISCO â€" The USF Dons used a strong first half to jump start their day as they handed the USD Toreros a 68-51 loss. USF received a game-high 18 points from Tim Derksen who led four Dons in double digits. USD received 11 points from Olin Carter and 10 each from Duda Sanadze and Alex Floresca.
In the first half the host USF Dons opened the game with a 10-0 run to take control. USD's first points came on a three-pointer from Cameron Neubauer with 15:25 left. Duda Sanadze would follow with a bucket to get the Toreros within five, but that would be as close as they would get. USF would extend their lead by as many as 17 before an Olin Carter three-pointer would complete the halftime score at 31-17. Carter paced USD with 5 points while the Dons received 10 points from Ronnie Boyce and 8 by Tim Derksen.
In the second half USD fell behind by 19 points (38-19), but rallied with a 13-0 run to pull within 38-32 with 13:39 to go. Duda Sanadze scored 8 of those points with two three-pointers and a pull up jumper in the key. USD would still be within 6 points at 43-37 following two Jito Kok free throws, but the Dons would go on a 10-0 run to take back control of the game. With 5:19 left Alex Floresca would convert two free throws to make it 60-51, but USF's Uche Ofoegbu would connect on a trey to give USF a double digit lead that they would hold the rest of the way.
For the game the Toreros shot 34.0% from the field and made just 4-23 three-pointers. USF also out-rebounded the Toreros 41-26.
USD returns home to host BYU on Thursday, Feb. 18th. The 8:05 p.m. contest will be televised by ESPNU.
