PROVO, UTAH -- After playing the BYU Cougars to a two-point loss this past Thursday at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, the Toreros flew to Provo for a second meeting within 48 hours. This time USD was no match as the Cougars handed the Toreros its worst defeat since turning Division I in 1979. The 91-33 loss also marked USD's lowest scoring output for a game with the previous mark being 36.
It was all BYU from the start as they jumped out to a 13-0 lead over the Toreros. USD's first bucket came from senior Duda Sanadze at the 13:22 mark, but then the Cougars extended their lead to 20-2. By halftime the Toreros trailed 39-11.
In the second half BYU eventually cleared their bench but would go on to outscore USD 52-22 over the final 20 minutes. For the game USD finished 0-20 from three-point land, marking the second time this league season they failed to convert a three-pointer. Junior forward Brett Bailey paced the Toreros with 9 points. Senior center Jito Kok added three more blocked shots to move into the No. 2 spot all-time among WCC players with 261 career blocks. He entered the game tied with former Saint Mary's center Omar Samhan with 258.
For BYU, freshman guard Nick Emery led the Cougars with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. BYU out-rebounded USD 49-28 and were credited with 25 assists on their 36 baskets. For the game BYU converted 57.1% from the field (36-63) and made 12-of-27 three-pointers.
Next week USD returns home to close out their regular-season schedule with games against Gonzaga (Feb. 25, 7pm) and Portland (Feb. 27, 6pm).
