SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (4-4, 2-0 WCC) snapped a three game losing streak today by dealing West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara (3-4, 0-1 WCC) a 4-1 loss at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. It is the Toreros' fourth win of the season as well as their second conference victory, both match last years' season totals.
Colomba DiFilippo and Maria-Paula Torres put the Toreros in control with a 6-1 victory in the No. 3 doubles spot over the Broncos' duo of Zeina El Tawil and Elizabeth Stephens. USD earned the point-clinching match 7-6 (3) after Drew Spinosa and Dana Oppinger won a hard-hitting match over Nabila Farah and Daniella Silva.
Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic slipped in the No. 2 doubles match against Chelby Cooke and Madison Clarke 7-5. No. 114 Stojanovic quickly rebounded against Cooke in singles and earned the Toreros' second point after a 6-4, 6-4 straight-sets victory.
In the No. 3 singles spot, Oppinger, hustled her way to a 7-6(3), 6-2 decision over Santa Clara's Silva. DiFilippo finished the match the way she started it with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over El Tawil ending play.
The Broncos' only point came when Delphine Rouvillois topped Blecher 6-3, 6-2 in the five spot. Spinosa was poised to pick up a win against Clarke but the match was abandoned 4-6, 6-4, 3-1. Torres and Farah fought out a 6-7(5), 6-2, 4-2 match that also remained unfinished with the Torero leading.
Sherri Stephens' squad will be back on the court next Sunday to face UC Irvine in San Diego. The Toreros lead the all-time series against the Anteaters 16-13.
