SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 31 Toreros men's tennis team (7-5) notched a 4-0 win over No. 29 Rice (12-3) on Tuesday at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. It is the Toreros' sixth win over a ranked opponent this season and their third sweep.
Play started with Romain Kalaydjian and Alex Araouzos taking a 6-1 decision over Emanuel Llamas and Jacob Hansen in doubles play. USD has been dominant in doubles play over the last two matches after a slight change in the line-up.
"I was really impressed with our doubles this afternoon. It is slowly coming together and the new energy is huge for this team." Head Coach Ryan Keckley said.
The energy carried over to the No. 1 court where Uros Petronijevic and Filip Vittek made quick work of David Warren and Adam Gustafsson in another 6-1 Torero victory. Jordan Angus and Joshua Page were leading, 4-3, when their match against Tommy Bennett and Jamie Malik was stopped.
No. 38 Angus completed a fiery 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gustafsson in No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2. The victory put the Toreros up 2-0 while they were in control of three of the remaining matches.
"We were fortunate to take the first four single sets and carried the momentum the whole way through the match."
Reigning WCC Player of the Week No. 33 Petronijevic did his part to put away the Owls with a 6-3, 6-4 beating of Malik.
Araouzos hat the match of the day in the No. 6 spot after falling being early to Henrik Munch. Munch jumped ahead early in the first set before the USD Sophomore made a determined run to take the set 7-5. The two players traded blows in the second set before Araouzos closed out the match 6-3.
Vittek was moments away from securing the clinching point in the No. 3 spot before the match was abandoned at 6-3, 5-3 as USD secured the win. The Owls were leading matches in the No. 4 and 5 spots but never managed to secure a point.
The Toreros will be back in action Thursday, as they will take part in the Pac-Coast Doubles tournament in La Jolla.
