SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 34 University of San Diego men's tennis team (10-7) lost in heartbreaking fashion on Friday at the hands of the No. 28 Tulane Green Wave (11-3) by a final score of 4-3.
"Guys fought and fought and fought today against a battle tested, competitive team." Head Coach Ryan Keckley said of the match. "We played an inspired doubles point and came out of the gates up 1-0."
The Toreros started the day on the right note as Jordan Angus and Jaan Kononov clinched the match's first point with a 6-2 defeat of Constatin Schmitz and Sebastian Rey in the No. 3 doubles spot. Romain Kalaydjian and Alexandros Araouzos also took care of their double match 6-1 over Alex Van Cott and Ian Van Cott. Uros Petronijevic and Filip Vittek dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 33 Dominik Koepfer and Chi-Shan Jao.
Vittek earned the Toreros' only straight sets victory in the No. 3 singles spot with his 6-2, 6-1 win over Rey. The Torero junior leads the team with 11 points in dual match play this season.
No. 118 Kalaydjian earned the Toreros third point when he outlasted A. Van Cott 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in three sets. It was Kalaydjian's first match in the No. 5 spot this year.
The Green Wave managed to earn all four of their points in singles play led by No. 1 Koepfer's 6-0, 6-4 win over No. 26 Petronijevic. Araouzos suffered a 6-2, 7-6(5) loss to Tyer Schick in the No. 6 spot and No. 111 Schmitz took a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 decision from No. 53 Angus. Jao cliched the match with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Kononov in the No. 4 spot.
Coach Keckley noted that the result did not match his teams' effort on the day as the Green Wave just had a little bit more on Friday.
"We came up a tad short in singles. Our opportunities presented themselves with a few team match points, but those points are the hardest to capture. I am really proud of the group and continue to be impressed by the way we stand together as a unit. We'll be ready to use this experience tomorrow against a feisty Princeton squad."
The Toreros will host No. 36 Princeton on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
