SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (6-6, 3-2 WCC) dropped a 4-2 match at Gonzaga University (11-1, 1-0 WCC) in Spokane, Wash. Friday afternoon. The Toreros will have a quick turnaround as they face the Portland Pilots on Saturday in Portland, Ore.

The day started with strong performances for the USD doubles pairs. Dana Oppinger and Drew Spinosa lead the Toreros with a 6-4 defeat of Samantha Polayes and Sophie Whittle in the No. 1 doubles spot. Colomba DiFilippo and Shani Blecher sealed the point for San Diego with a thrilling 7-5 win in the three spot over Sissi Koehler and Domonique Garley.

In singles play the Bulldogs turned up the pressure on the Toreros earning the first three singles points. Spinosa dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to Polayes in the two spot followed by DiFilippo losing a 6-3, 7-6 match on court five. Freshman Sophia Chow forced a third set but Garley closed the door on a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win for the Bulldogs.

Maria-Paula Torres continues to establish herself as a player to watch for San Diego. The freshman earned her fourth win of the season on Friday with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Alex Bourguignon. It is Torres' first WCC win of her career.

Marta Stojanovic pushed her opponent time and time again in the No. 1 spot but ultimately came up just short. In the top spot, the Torero senior fell in a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 match to Whittle. Oppinger's match was left unfinished with the USD senior battling in the third set.

San Diego will travel to Portland to play their sixth conference match of the season at 11 a.m. Saturday.
