SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 31 Toreros men's tennis team (12-7, 1-0 WCC) defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-11, 0-4 WCC) by a final score of 4-1 at the Santaluz Culub on Friday. It is the Toreros' first conference win this season and extends San Diego's WCC winning streak to 19-games.
"It was a fantastic event at the Santaluz Club today." Head Coach Ryan Keckley said of playing at a different San Diego venue Friday. "A great crowd came out to support this team and our boys put on quite the display for the members. I'd like to thank Doug Bradley (USD '85) and Amanda Fink for hosting us."
The day started with No. 70 Filip Vittek and Uros Petronijevic earning a 6-2 win in doubles play against Hayden Smith and Jordan Smith. Romain Kalaydjian and Alexandros Araouzos clinched the first point of the day in the No. 2 doubles spot with a 6-3 defeat of Emillio Moreno and Ruadhan O'Sullivan. James Ponwith made his season debut in the Toreros line up pairing with Jaan Kononov in the No. 3 spot. The San Diego duo led Vincete Varas and Ronzai Saurombe 5-3 when play stopped.
"We really took care of business in doubles on all three courts." Keckley added.
In singles Araouzos delivered one of his most dominant performances of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 beating of Varas in the No. 5 spot. Jordan Smith earned the sole Gonzaga point in the No. 2 doubles spot to narrow the San Diego lead to 2-1. However, the Toreros' depth would prove to be too much.
In the three spot Kalaydjian landed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hayden Smith to put the Toreros ahead 3-1. No. 39 Petronijevic clinched the USD win in the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 match over O'Sullivan. With the win the Toreros remain undefeated all-time against the Bulldogs with a perfect 12-0 mark.
Freshman Pratt Keerasuntonpong made his first appearance in the Toreros dual match line up at the No. 6 spot and trailed by one set when play was abandoned. Kononov had a 6-4, 3-1 lead over Moreno in the No. 4 spot.
"We had a few new faces in the line up this morning and both James and Pratt rose to the occasion and played their hearts out. It's a great feeling to start conference play with a 'W' and we hope to build on this momentum for tomorrow's matches." Keckley said.
The Toreros will return to the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center on Saturday to face the Portland Pilots at 11 a.m. and the Marquette Golden Eagles at 3 p.m.
