Toreros rally falls short at LMU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (7-8, 4-4 WCC) dropped a tightly contested 4-3 match to the Loyola Marymount Lions (8-10, 3-3 WCC) on Friday in Los Angeles, Calif. The Toreros rallied after falling behind 3-0 but ultimately lost after extending the deciding match to three sets.

Freshman Maria-Paula Torres earned the Toreros first point in the number No. 5 spot with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Anna Romeka. It is the Peru native's fifth dual match victory this season and her second WCC win.

Drew Spinosa grabbed her third consecutive victory after defeating the Lions' Kristine Kouyoumjian 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The sophomore is now 3-2 in WCC play and is 3-1 in the No. 3 spot this season.

Colomba DiFilippo continues to be a star at the bottom of the Torero lineup. The junior is 8-1 in the No. 6 spot this season and leads the team with nine dual match victories. She defeated LMU's Tatijana Sheikhan 6-4, 6-2.

Unfortunately the Toreros could not pull out the victory after falling into a 3-0 hole. The Lions secured the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 3 spots. At the start of singles play the top of the Lions lineup earned victories in the No. 1 and 2 spots to set the tone. Marta Stojanovic dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Jessica Perez while Dana Oppinger fell 6-1, 6-0 to Andrea Crespo. After the Torero rally, Sophia Chow was outlasted by Elvira Juravliova 6-2, 5-7, 6-0.

The women will be back on the court tomorrow in Malibu, Calif. to take on the No. 10 Pepperdine Waves. The Waves hosted BYU on Friday and cruised to a 7-0 victory over the Cougars. The match will begin at 12 p.m.
