SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (7-10-1, 3-5-1 WCC) earned a 4-1 decision in their regular season finale against the San Diego State Aztecs (6-15, 0-3 Mountain West) Wednesday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Drew Spinosa and Dana Oppinger got the action started for the Toreros with a 6-1 defeat of Isabelle Hoorn and Taylor Lederman in the No. 1 doubles spot. The win breaks a three-match skid for the San Diego duo and is the pair's fifth win of the season.
Colomba DiFilippo and Shani Blecher secured the first point of the evening in a 6-3 win over Tami Nguyen and Kennedy Davis. It is DiFilippo's team leading eighth doubles dual victory and her fourth win when paired with Blecher.
DiFilippo carried the momentum over to singles competition where she notched another Torero point. The Santiago, Chile native cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lederman in the No. 6 spot. It is the 10th dual match victory for DiFilippo, which leads this year's team. Spinosa continued the Torero dominance with a 6-2, 6-1 performance over Paola Diazde Regules. The sophomore is now 4-1 in the No. 3 spot this season.
Senior Marta Stojanovic sealed the team's win in her final match in San Diego with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot. The Serbia native grabbed her sixth dual match victory this season with the win over State's Nguyen.
Davis picked up the Aztecs' sole point with a win over San Diego freshman Maria-Paula Torres in the No. 4 spot. Oppinger and Sophia Chow were in the midst of their third-sets against their State counterparts when play was abandoned.
The WCC Championships will start Thursday April 28, in Claremont, Calif. The tournament seeding and schedule will be released early next week.
