SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 30 Toreros men's tennis team (22-7, 9-0 WCC) took another step towards their WCC three-peat on Friday as they drubbed the Portland Pilots (16-8, 6-3 WCC) by a final score of 4-0 in Claremont, Calif.
The Pilots gave San Diego a challenge early in doubles play as they led two of the three matches. However, the two-time defending champs would rally to victories in the No. 2 and 3 spots to earn the first point of the day.
Jaan Kononov and Alexandros Araouzos ended the match on court three with a 6-3 decision over the Pilots' Felix Fan and Pierre Garcia. The All-WCC second team tandem of Jordan Angus and Joshua Page battled back in their dual against Alex Wallace and Kent Andreasen to clinch the doubles point 7-6. No. 89 Uros Petronijevic and Filip Vittek where locked in a tight 5-5 match in the top spot against Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia when play was abandoned.
The Toreros hit their stride early in singles play, winning all six first-sets. No. 67 Angus blitzed M. Garcia in the No. 2 spot to grab San Diego's second point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. It was Angus' team-leading 24th singles victory of the season.
Another member of the Toreros' outstanding senior class was the next to grab a point. Romain Kalaydjian dealt Fan a 6-3, 6-2 loss in the five spot. Kaladjian was unable to close out Fan when the two played in the regular season match up in March.
To seal the victory, first team All-WCC performer, Vittek out lasted P. Garcia 6-2, 7-6(5) in the No. 3 spot. Vittek defeated Garcia in the teams' previous meeting as well. The Slovakia native now has 23 wins this season, just two off of his career high of 25.
Araouzos was one point away from a victory in the No. 6 spot as he led 6-3, 5-4 over Portland's Carlos Donat. No. 61 Uros Petronijevic was moments away from beginning his third set against Pervolarakis when play was stopped and Kononov was tied a 2-2 in his third set.
San Diego will face No. 61 Pepperdine tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in the WCC Championship Final. The Toreros beat the Waves by a final of 4-0 in San Diego on April 17. This will be the third time in three years that the Toreros and Waves meet in the final. San Diego has won the last two meeting by the final score of 4-1.
