SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (6-8, 3-4 WCC) dropped their final home match of the season on Friday to the University of San Francisco Dons (5-10, 3-3 WCC) by a final score of 4-2.
The Toreros started the day with brilliant doubles play in the No. 2 and 3 spots. Senior Marta Stojanovic and freshman Maria-Paula Torres dominated a 6-0 match over Shanna Dos Santos and Hanna Borjeson. It is the duo's second win together after being paired up last weekend.
Shani Blecher and Colomba DiFilippo finished off the doubles point with another 6-0 beating of the Don's Sofia Holmberg and Genevive McCloskey. Dana Oppinger and Drew Spinosa fell behind No. 75 Andrea Ka and Thyra Taune 5-0 but the match was abandoned after San Diego clinched the point.
San Diego honored five seniors in-between doubles and singles play as Stojanovic, Oppinger, Blecher, Mikayla Morkel-Brink and Marisa Marsh played in their final home match at USD.
In singles play Spinosa recovered to earn a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot. It is the sophomore's fifth dual match victory this season, tying her for second most on the team.
The Dons controlled play on the other five courts grabbing the first set in each of the matches. Stojanovic suffered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to No. 117 Ka on the No. 1 court that sealed the match for San Francisco. Freshmen Torres and Sofia Chow dropped matches on courts four and five and Oppinger lost to Taune in court two.
The Toreros will resume WCC play next Friday in Los Angeles as they face Loyola Marymount University (7-8, 2-1 WCC). San Diego defeated the Lions 4-3 last season and leads the all-time series 34-4.
