Toreros Rally for 2-1 Win over Elon

Aug. 28, 2016

Box Score

DURHAM, N.C. -- After giving up a goal in the 12th minute, the Toreros (1-0-1) rallied to score two goals to earn a 2-1 victory over Elon Sunday morning at Duke. Michael Turner scored the equalizer in the 30th minute off an assist from Jared Hegardt, and then freshman Miguel Berry scored the game-winner in 59th minute off a beautiful pass from Djordje Babic.

Coming off an emotional 1-1 draw against Duke Friday evening, the Toreros quickly found themselves in a hole Sunday morning after allowing a Nick Adamczyk 12th minute goal, which came off an assist from Marcel Fehrenholz.

Elon had 10 first half shots to USD's two, but the Toreros took a 1-1 tie into the break after Michael Turner scored from ten yards out in the 30th minute. Jared Hegardt, who joined USD as a graduate student after three seasons at WCC rival Santa Clara, provided the assist. Both Turner and Hegardt attended Cathedral Cathlolic High School.

In the 59th minute, the Toreros took the lead for good. Junior Djordje Babic sent a beautiful pass from the left wing to Miguel Berry at the top of the box. Berry, a freshman from Poway, Calif., fired a rocket in to the upper right corner of the net for his first career collegiate goal.

The Toreros dominated the possession, forcing Elon the rely on the counter attack. Elon finished the match with 16 shots, but rarely put pressure on the USD defense or Olsen in goal; USD had six shots. In total the Toreros were outshot 38-12 over the weekend, but their back line played strong all weekend to limit the damage.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Olsen (1-0-1) collected four saves to earn his first win of 2016.

For the Toreros, it was their first win of the 2016 season. They tied Duke 1-1 Friday evening, before topping the Phoenix for a huge resume-building win. Elon is receiving votes in the NSCAA poll and has made the NCAA Championships in four of the last five seasons.

The three senior standouts Parker Price, Merlin Hoeckendorff, and Michael Turner were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Toreros return to California next week, but remain on the road, heading to UC Santa Barbara for a Friday 7:00 p.m. match. It will be USD's second consecutive match against a participant from the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
