Sept. 10, 2016

Box Score

SAN LUIS OBIPSO, Calif. -- The USD football team (1-1) fell at Cal Poly 38-16 Saturday for their first loss of the season. The Mustangs (1-1), a scholarship program and member of the Big Sky Conference, outgained the Toreros 484-252, with 354 of their yards coming on the ground.

Quarterback Anthony Lawrence went 15-for-24 for 127 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His top target was tight end Ross Dwelley, who hauled in nine passes and both touchdowns; 97 of Lawrence's 127 yards went to Dwelley. Senior running back Jonah Hodges had another productive game, gaining 93 yards on just 12 carries (7.8 ypc).

Safety Colton Giorgi led the Torero defense with 16 total tackles, a sack, and a pass breakup. Linebackers Alec Moreno (12 tackles) and Max Michaels (10 tackles) also racked up double-digit tackles.

The Toreos kept it close in the first half and held a lead until the final seconds of the second quarter. After falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter, USD drove 75 yards in eight plays, highlighted by a Hodges 54 yard run. On a third and goal from the one yard line, Lawrence and Dwelley connected for their first touchdown.

After holding the Mustangs scoreless for their next two drives, the Toreros scored on a 13 yard pass from Lawrence to Dwelley with 50 seconds left in the first half. However the Toreros PAT attempt failed, giving them a 13-10 lead.

The Mustangs were able to march 82 yards in just 39 seconds to take a 17-13 lead at halftime. The Toreros wouldn't hold a lead again.

Cal Poly would go on to score touchdowns on their first two drives in the third quarter to open up a 31-13 lead.

A Jamal Agnew 54 yard punt return to the Cal Poly 15 yard line gave USD great field possession, but the Toreros' offense stalled inside the five yard line and they had to settle for a Patrick Murray 21 yard field goal.

The Toreros have a bye next week, but then return home for a huge game against the Dayton Flyers September 24 at 4:00 p.m. USD and Dayton were co-PFL champions last year, but the Flyers received the PFL's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs due to their 13-12 win over USD.
