Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. â€" The USD men's soccer team (1-1-1) fell at No. 10 UC Santa Barbara (3-0-0) 5-2 Friday evening. After an evenly-matched opening 20 minutes, the Gauchos pulled away with three goals in a three minute span and never let go of the lead. Freshman Miguel Berry and Merlin Baus scored for USD; Michael Turner assisted both goals, while Jared Hegardt and Djordje Babic also tallied assists.

In the 25th minute, UCSB's Kevin Feucht curled a goal in after being assisted by Daniel Amo.

Less than a minute later, Feucht struck again with a header inside the far post off a Josue Espana cross.

In the 28th minute, Ahinga Selemani made a run on the left side and found himself with a 2-on-1 and finished in the top right corner to give the Gauchos a 3-0 lead.

The Toreros struck back in the 42nd minute with a beautiful display of passing. After a long ball into the box by Gustav Brandt, Michael Turner made a sliding pass to Jared Hegardt, who made a nice touch pass to Miguel Berry who sent a rocket into the upper right corner to give the Toreros' their first goal of the evening. It was Berry's second goal of the season.

Just a few minutes later, the Gauchos' Ahinga Selemani got into a skirmish with a couple of the Toreros at the top of the USD box. Selemani lost his cool and needed to be held back by his teammates as shouting ensued. Selemani was issued a yellow card, but so was the Toreros' Merlin Hoeckendorff, who appeared to be an innocent bystander.

Within the first few minutes of the second half, the Gauchos added to their total. Randy Mendoza sent a long high cross from the left corner that found Nick Depuy's head.

In the 61st minute, the Toreros cut into the deficit with more exceptional passing. Turner fielded a ball on the left side of the box and sent a cross to Djordje Babic's feet. Babic sent a pass to Merlin Baus to the top of the box and he finished in the lower left corner. It was Baus' first career goal as a Torero; he spent his first two years at Virginia Tech.

The Gauchos struck once more in the 87th minute with a breakaway goal by Dalton Pando.

The Toreros finished with nine shots, putting five on goal. UCSB had 11 shots with seven on frame. USD had seven corners to the Gauchos' three.

The Toreros return to action next Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they host UC Davis for their home opener
