LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Toreros (3-2-2) held on to top UNLV 4-3 in a wild high-scoring road match Tuesday evening. After USD jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes, UNLV rallied to tie it at 3-3 early in the second half. Senior Michael Turner converted a 68th minute penalty kick to seal the victory for USD, his second goal of the match.
Junior Patrick McGrath scored his first goal of the season in the fifth minute to give USD a quick 1-0. McGrath collected his own rebound and scored under the goalie from about six yards out.
The Toreros struck again just four minutes later when Turner scored his first goal of the evening after being set up by a Gustav Brandt corner kick.
The Rebels would cut into their deficit in the 16th minute with a Marquis Pitt goal following a corner kick.
The Toreros quickly added to their total in the second half when freshman Miguel Berry scored on a sliding shot in the 51st minute to give USD a 3-1 lead. Berry and Turner are tied for the team lead with four goals.
The Rebels would score just 35 seconds later when Memo Diaz finished a Danny Musovski assist to bring the score to 3-2.
Musovski tied the match at 3-3 five minutes later when he scored from eight yards out from the left side.
The Toreros retook the lead in the 68th minute when Michael Turner converted a penalty kick. Turner rushed to the ball immediately after the ref blew the whistle and sent a strike into the lower left corner as the Rebel keeper dove the opposite way. Turner has converted both his PK attempts this season.
The Toreros displayed excellent possession and ball control in the final 20 minutes to run out the clock and seal the win.
Playing in his hometown of Las Vegas, Torero goalkeeper Thomas Olsen (2-1-2) collected two saves and picked up his 22nd career win.
The Toreros are back on the road Thursday when they travel to CSUN (2-4-0) for a 7:00 p.m. match.
