Senior midfielder Danielle Gonzales' goal with 16 seconds left, lifted the University of San Diego women's soccer team (5-4-1) to a thrilling 1-0 win over visiting Cal State Fullerton (3-7-0) Friday evening in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
With time winding down in a scoreless contest, sophomore forward Summer Mason took control of the ball near the top left of the goal box, and she dribbled it to the near post, and fired off a rocket of a cross, where Gonzalez then bumped the ball into the goal, to give USD the victory.
San Diego dominated time of possession in the first half and had several great scoring opportunities not go its way. One of the better opportunities came n the 31st minute of action. Mason was again in the mix, as she fired off one shot that was blocked by the Fullerton defense, and she got the rebound, then hit a laser strike right back at the goal, only to see the Fullerton ‘keeper come up with a save, to preserve the scoreless contest.
The Titans also had a few good looks at the goal in the second half, with one of their best scoring opportunities coming in the 60th minute, as Connie Caliz took a corner kick for CSF, and sent it into a crowded goal box. The ball eventually found the feet of Tala Hadad, and she fired off a shot, but Amber Michel was there to record the save, to again preserve a scoreless contest.
San Diego out shot the Titans 12-5, and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Michel picked up the win in goal for USD, as she allowed no goals, and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, Jennifer Stuart, was saddled with the loss in goal for CSF, as she allowed one goal and recorded one save.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they open West Coast Conference play against the University of San Francisco on in a 7 p.m. match at Torero Stadium.
