SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's soccer team thumped the University of San Francisco, 3-1, Thursday evening in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams at Torero Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 6-4-1 overall, move to 1-0-0 in the WCC, and have won three of their last four matches. With the loss, the Dons fall to 4-7-0 overall, and 0-1-0 in the WCC.

San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as in the 20th minute of action, Summer Mason took control of the ball on the left side of the field, dribbled up the line, then crossed the ball into a very crowded goal box, where Jacqueline Altschuld was there to redirect the ball with her head into the back of the net, past a diving goalkeeper, to give USD a 1-0 lead.

Just nine minutes later, San Diego doubled its lead. Tara Meier dribbled the ball through the USF defense, then sent a through ball to her right, where Kelley Carusa was there to cross the ball to the middle of the goal box, and Julia Sherwood hit a one-timer off the cross into the back of the net, moving the score to 2-0.

Then in the 59th minute of action, the Dons spoiled the shutout, as Maddy Glaser took the ball away from the USD attack, and sent a long through ball to a streaking Jessica Nakae, then took a few touches on the ball and was able to sneak the ball past USD's goalkeeper, to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

USD then put the math out of reach in the 82nd minute of action, as Rachel Conners took the ball up the left side, and sent a small cross to Mason, an she in turn took one touch, and scored the final goal of the match, to give USD a 3-1 win.

USD out shot the Dons, 14-10, and each team had three corner kicks.

Amber Michel was credited with the win in goal or USD, as she allowed one goal and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, Makayla Presgrave, was saddled with the loss for the Dons, as she allowed three goals.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they host Santa Clara University in a 7 p.m. match at Torero Stadium.
