SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Sophomore Julieanna DeArmas scored a beautiful game-winning goal in the 103rd minute to lift the Toreros (3-2-1) to a 3-2 win over DePaul (1-3-2) in extra time Thursday evening in Torero Stadium. The Toreros nearly won in regulation, but the Blue Demons scored the equalizer in the 87th minute to force extra time.
"It feels amazing, the best feeling in the world," DeArmas described after the match. "It was a good win to get. We kind of lost our momentum at the end of the game but came right back and put up a fight and got the W."
"It's a really good moment for the team," Head Coach Ada Greenwood said after the match. "Julianne has been working hard and she has a great team attitude and there is no one more deserving than her to score the winner. She has been working her tail off and this was something that will help her out down the road."
"It was a very weird game," Grennwood continued. "I felt we were very fortunate to go up two-nil; the first goal was very fortunate and but the second goal was well-worked. To DePaul's credit, they fought back after we took our foot off the pedal. Then we regrouped and came out with better purpose in over time."
After a scoreless first half, the Toreros scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. The first came on an own goal after DePaul's Elizabeth Endy was trying to clear the ball, but instead headed it straight backwards and it went over the Blue Demons' goalkeeper's head to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros added to their total shortly after in the 54th minute. DeArmas played a ball out wide left to Summer Mason who pulled the DePaul defense out of position and then she played a perfect pass in front of the goal to Kelley Carusa who finished with one touch, opening up a 2-0 lead for USD.
DePaul caught a break of their own in the 63rd minute. After a failed USD clearance, DePaul's Taylor Schissler received the ball at the top of the box and scored with a goal in the upper right corner.
In the 78th minute, DePaul nearly tied the match. Abby Reed had a one-on-one with the USD goalkeeper, Amber Michel, but she made a brilliant diving save to her left to preserve the Torero lead.
However, the Blue Demons would tie the match up in the 87th minute. Franny Cerny played a ball backwards to Abby Reed at the top of the box who connected with the equalizer.
After no shots on goal from either team in the first extra time period, the Toreros quickly ended the match in the third minute of the second extra time period.
DeArmas received an errant pass from DePaul in the far right corner of the box and sent a rocket to the far upper corner for the game-winner.
"I was calling for it and saw that the defender was a couple feet away, so I had room to take a shot," DeArmas recalled. "That's my favorite thing to do, to shoot from outside the box, so I took it."
DePaul finished the match with 14 shots to USD's five and had 13 corners, while USD only had four, but the Torero defense was stout all evening and kept USD in the match.
Goalkeeper Amber Michel had five saves to pick up her third career win.
The Toreros return to action on Sunday when they travel north to take on UCLA at 5:00 p.m.
