SPOKANE, Wash. - The USD men's basketball team (10-11, 3-6) lost at No. 3 Gonzaga (21-0, 9-0), the nation's lone unbeaten team, 79-43 Thursday evening. Olin Carter led the Toreros with 12 points.
"When you play a team like this you have to be clicking on all cylinders and you have to execute the game plan to a T and you have to make shots," Head Coach Lamont Smith said after the game. 'We didn't do any of those tonight and they took it to us. Hopefully we learned and hopefully we can get better and turn the page very quickly."
The Zags made their first five shots from the field, which gave them an early 10-2 lead. Carter, who missed the last game (illness), scored the Toreros' first ten points to cut the deficit to five (15-10).
Gonzaga would respond with a 10-0 run to give them a 25-10 lead, their largest of the first half. The Toreros would trail by double-digits for the remainder of the game.
The Zags' Nigel Williams-Goss had 19 first half points as Gonzaga took a 37-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Toreros' offense stalled in the second half, scoring just two points in the first 11 minutes of the half. This allowed the Zags to extend their lead to 60-25 with 9:52 remaining.
Outside of Carter's 12 points, the Toreros' next leading scorer was Frank Ryder with 10 points. Williams-Goss led Gonzaga with 25 points (11-for-15 Shooting). Johnathan Williams chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Zach Collins added 10 points.
USD had trouble with the Zags' size and were outscored 50-16 in the paint. They shot just 32 percent from the field (16-for 50) and committed 15 turnovers, which led to 19 Zag points.
The Toreros continue their Northwest road trip when they play at Portland on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The game will be shown locally on TheW.tv and can be heard on ESPN 1700 AM.
