PORTLAND, Ore. -- The USD men's basketball team won at Portland 68-52 Saturday evening. After scoring a season-low 43 points in back-to-back games, the Toreros equaled their largest win margin (16) to even their record to 11-11 on the year (4-6 in conference). Olin Carter knocked down five three-pointers and paced the Toreros with 24 points.
"I was really happy with our play," Head Coach Lamont Smith said after the game. "I thought we did a good job defensively and made some adjustments at half time to take away the three, which was hurting us in the first half. We held Portland to 34 percent from the field in the second half and limited them to one three after they had five in the first half. I thought that was a big difference in the game."
Behind eight early points from Rashad Jackson, the Pilots jumped out to a quick 12-7 lead. They would hold the lead until the 9:45 mark when a Brett Bailey fast break dunk tied the game at 20-20.
The Toreros opened up their largest lead of the first half after a 12-2 run put them up 27-22 with 5:01 remaining. Carter had eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, during the run.
Carter led all scorers with 13 first half points and the Toreros shot 60 percent (6-for-10) from deep to take a 38-30 lead at half. The Toreros had assists on nine of their 13 first half field goals.
USD held a lead for the entire second half. Portland closed the deficit to five points with 17:38 remaining on a Jazz Johnson three, but didn't get closer than nine in the final ten minutes.
Aside from Carter's 24 points, Brett Bailey notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron Neubauer added 16 points, with 12 of them coming in the second half. Jazz Johnson led the way for the Pilots with 19 points; Rashad Jackson had 12.
USD dominated the glass, finishing with a 37-14 rebounding advantage. They shot 50 percent (24-for-48) from the field, which tied a season best.
"We did an excellent job on the glass," Smith said. "That was a key going in to the game, especially on the offensive glass. We did a great job boxing out and only gave up two offensive rebounds. That was outstanding. I'm really happy for our guys."
The Toreros will return home Thursday when they take on LMU at 7:00 p.m. USD knocked off the Lions 69-62 in Los Angeles January 19.
