PORTLAND - A 76th minute goal by Summer Mason and quality defending propelled San Diego to a 1-0 victory at Portland on Thursday night.

Mason scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season to lead the Toreros (7-9, 5-1 WCC) to its sixth win in the past seven games. She connected on a left-footed shot from 25 yards out that kissed the inside of the right post before heading to the back of the net.

Mason's nine goals are the most by a Torero since Emily Dillon scored nine times in 2013.

USD's defense was excellent and registered the team's second shutout of the season. Tara Meier and Abby King locked down the center of the backline while Kelley Carusa and Natalie Copenhaver played well out wide. Ally Ocon had a nice game defensively in the holding midfield position.

Amber Michel made three saves in goal, including a couple challenging stops. Her best save came in the 25th minute when she was able to tip a shot heading to the top right corner of the goal wide of the post and out of play.

USD had its opportunities earlier in the game. Mason broke through the defense in the fifth minute and had a one-on-one with the Portland's (5-11-1, 2-5 WCC) goalkeeper but her shot was saved.

Ocon ripped a shot from nearly 30 yards out in the 63rd minute that beat the goalkeeper but ringed off the crossbar.

There were a couple close calls for the Toreros late. A header by Portland's, Boston Griffiths, went just wide in the 70th minute. The Pilots had back-to-back shots in the 81st minute but the first was saved by Michel and the second hit the crossbar.

The Toreros will look to continue its momentum Saturday at 7 p.m. (PT) when it travels to Gonzaga.
