SAN DIEGO - Sean Bowman scored a goal for San Francisco in the 66th minute to hand San Diego its second home loss of the season, a 1-0 decision Friday night at Torero Stadium.
The Toreros (8-5-3, 2-2-2 WCC) have lost two of their past three contests after producing a seven-game unbeaten streak from Sept. 17-Oct. 22. The defeat put a damper on a night dedicated to USD's senior class of Merlin Baus, Djordje Babic, Leon Mueller-Wiesen, Patrick McGrath and Thomas Olsen.
USD had its chances throughout the match but could not find the finishing touch. The Toreros outshot the Dons 14-10 - including a 12-6 margin in the second half - and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Miguel Berry was the most dangerous target up top for USD, generating a team-high five shots with four on goal. He was robbed twice by a USF (7-8, 4-1 WCC) defender on the goal line, first in the 4th minute when his shot off his own rebound was cleared away, then again in the 65th minute when a header destined for goal was turned away at the last moment.
The Toreros absolutely dominated the final 20 minutes of the match, outshooting the Dons, 9-1. Babic, Aidan Marmion and Freddy Polzer all had quality looks at goal but could not generate the equalizing strike.
Henry Lander, Josiah Benjamin, Aaron Frey and Marmion had strong defensive games and helped USD weather sustained pressure by the Dons throughout the first half to keep the score level going into halftime. The backline played well in the second half also and its only blemish was a quality run and finish by Bowman.
Olsen was strong in goal, making two saves and coming off his line well to clear crosses and balls over the top.
The Toreros will look to rebound next week when they conclude the regular season on Saturday at Santa Clara at 7 p.m. (PT).
