SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The USD women's basketball team defeated Biola 79-58 in an exhibition contest inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion Tuesday evening. USD had 11 players score, led by Aubrey Ward El's 19 points (8-for-14).
Joining Ward-El in double-digits was Caroline Buhr and Sydney Williams, who each chipped in 14 points. Buhr added a game-high eight rebounds. In her first career start, Alexandra Hagen had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Toreros hit the ground running and jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game's first three minutes, fueled by a couple lay-ins from Carolina Buhr. They closed the opening quarter strong as well, finishing it on an 8-0 run to take a 22-7 lead.
Their run extended to 12-0 as they built a 20 point lead (27-7) early in the second quarter. Aubrey Ward-El lad all scorers with 12 first half points on 5-for-7 shooting. Caroline Buhr had eight points and a team-high six rebounds as the Toreros took a 38-23 lead in to the locker room at halftime.
The Toreros kept the pressure on the Eagles in the third quarter, making nine of their first 12 field goals.
The Toreros shot 50 percent from the floor while holding Biola to 38.5 percent. USD had a commanding lead on the glass, hauling in 47 rebounds to the Eagles' 24. The Toreros also did a great job distributing the ball, recording 20 assists on their 32 field goals.
Biola was led by DeMoria White's game-high 23 points (9-for-18 shooting).
The Toreros regular season opener is Friday when they host San Diego Christian at 6:00 p.m. in the USD Sports Center Gym. The game will be streamed live on TheW.tv.
