SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The USD women's basketball team (11-14, 5-10) was knocked off by BYU 65-47 Thursday evening inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros were led by Aubrey Ward-El's 15 points.
The Cougars began the game on a 7-0 run, but the Toreros responded with an 8-1 run of their own to tie the game. However, the Toreros scored just two points in the final six minutes of the first quarter leading to a 16-2 BYU run (24-10).
Fueled by hot shooting from deep, the Cougars put together another run in the second quarter to open up a 42-17 lead with four minutes left in the first ha;f. USD went on a mini 8-2 run to close the half, bringing the score to 44-25 at the break.
The Torero defense tightened up in the second half, holding BYU scoreless for a seven minute stretch in the fourth quarter. The Toreros didn't allow a Cougar three-pointer in the second half after giving up eight in the first frame.
The Toreros outrebounded BYU 34-32, but shot just 18 percent (3-for-17) from three-point range and 32 percent from the field (17-for-53).
Ward-El scored 13 of USD's first 15 points and finished the game with 15. Caroline Buhr added 12 points and seven rebounds and Sydney Williams chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.
The Cougars had a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring in double-digits. Cassie Broadhead, the WCC's leading scorer, led the way with 14 points.
The Toreros host Santa Clara for their final home game Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Before the game, there will be a ceremony to honor the Toreros' three seniors: Edi Utibe, Katherine Hamilton and Cori Woodward.
