Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros (6-2) came to the courts on Saturday ready to compete. They played in a doubleheader against UC Irvine (1-7) and Saint Mary's (3-4) at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros walked away with two more team wins under their belt.

"We had a great week of practice and felt physically prepared to take on both matches today," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "We came out a bit flat in doubles but gathered ourselves emotionally. UCI always has been known for their doubles play, so it was nice to steal away the point from them."

USD 6, UC Irvine 1:
In the first match of the day San Diego defeated UC Irvine in a 6-1 decision. USD's No. 2 doubles team clinched the doubles point after an early win from the No. 3 team. USD's No. 1 doubles team of Filip Vittek and Guus Koevermans were second to finish, but lost to UCI's Luis Lopez and Mason Hansen.

In singles play, USD won five of the six matches. First to finish was Guus Koevermans, who played at the No. 3 position. He won his match against Derek Chen in a 6-2, 6-0 decision. Second to finish was Gui Osorio, who played at the No. 4 spot and defeated Hansen (6-1, 6-2). At the No. 6 spot, Alexandros Araouzos defeated Andrew Gong 6-2, 6-0.

Joshua Page was next to finish in the No. 2 spot. He battled it out with UCI's Lopez, but ended with a victory and a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 11-9. The No. 5 singles player, Joel Gamerov defeated Vatsal Bajpai after a hard fight with a score of 7-6 (1), 4-6, 10-8. The only singles loss of the day came from No. 79 Filip Vittek. He played Luca Marqaurd in the No. 1 spot and loss 6-7 (4), 6-1, 5-10.

San Diego 4, Saint Mary's 0:
In the second match of the day, the Toreros played until they clinched the victory at 4-0. USD gained the doubles point again after a win by the No. 2 and No. 3 teams. Similar to the first match, the No. 1 team wasn't able to come out with a win.

Singles play ended shortly, after the third singles player won and clinched the overall victory for USD. First to finish was Gui Osorio, who played at the No. 3 position. He defeated Calvin Jordaan in a dominating 6-0, 6-0 decision. At the No. 4 spot, Joel Gamerov was the next win of the day. He beat Matt Campana 6-1, 6-0.

"In both singles matches, I was really impressed by our two freshmen, Joel and Gui" said Coach Keckley. "They are gamers and continue to play the right way in pressure moments."

The last win of day was made by No. 79 Filip Vittek, who played at the No. 1 spot against Nash Vollenweider. Vittek won with a 6-1, 6-3 score and ultimately ended play after clinching the win for USD.

"As a team, we were highly competitive in every spot," said Coach Keckley. "We are starting to gain momentum on every court. Next up is Cal which will be a big test for this young team."

Next week the Toreros take on California, Thursday March 2 at 12:00 p.m.
