Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros (3-1) came out victorious against cross-town rival San Diego State University (1-3) with a final score of 4-2. Josh Page clinched the win at No. 3 singles in straight sets over Sander Gjoels-Anderson.

Even though San Diego State clinched the doubles point after they won the last of the three matches, the No. 1 USD doubles team got a point for USD early in the set. Filip Vittek and Joshua Page defeated SDSU's No. 1 doubles team with a score of 7-5. Finishing first was the No. 3 doubles team, Alexandros Araouzos and Gui Osorio, who lost to SDSU's Joel Popov and Rafael Gonzalez Almazan 6-4. Last to finish was Guus Koevermans and Joel Gamerov, who played in the second doubles team position but were toppled by Milen Ianakiev and Santiago Cevallos 7-6 (5).

"Competing against SDSU is always an emotional rollercoaster," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "We knew we would have our hands full, especially on their home turf. When things got tight, we stuck together and relied on our fundamentals."

In singles play, Gamerov was the first to win against Santiago Cevallos (6-3, 6-2) in the No. 4 position. Vittek, who finished second was the only USD loss in singles play. He lost in USD's No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-4 to SDSU's Milen Ianakiev. Araouzos finished third in the No. 6 position, with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Rafael Gonzalez Almazan.

Gui Osorio finished next in the No. 5 spot and took down Joel Popov in a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Last to finish was Josh Page, who clinched the big win for USD after he beat Sander Gjoels-Anderson 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. In the No. 2 position, Guus Koevermans was on his way to a win, but the match went unfinished after USD closed out the match. The match was discontinued against Marco Goles-Babic at 3-6, 6-3, 4-2.

"We were aggressive down the home stretch and that's what guided this team to a 4-2 win today," said Coach Keckley. "I am particularly proud of Josh Page, who clinched the game winner for us. That's not an easy thing to do when the match is on the line."

USD picks up play in a doubleheader next Saturday Feb. 11 against UC Davis at 10 a.m. and UC San Diego at 2 p.m.

"We'll get back to work in the doubles department this week," said Coach Keckley. "It is a constant work in progress, but we are seeing team growth daily. We are close, but need a few wins to encourage the confidence."
