SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD men's tennis team (7-5) fell to No. 30 Tulane (12-2) 4-0 Friday afternoon in the semi-finals of the San Diego Spring Break Tournament. The Toreros host Iowa Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for their final match of the tournament.
The Toreros fell behind after the Green Wave captured the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Tulane's Tyler Schick and Ewan Moore knocked off Guus Koevermans and Alexandros Araouzos 6-3 at the two spot, and then the Toreros' No. 1 squad of Josh Page and Filip Vittek lost by the same score.
"Tulane played well today and made us uncomfortable early on during the doubles point," Head Coach Ryan Keckly said. "We fought hard to open up the singles matches and brought a lot of fire to the fight, but at some positions we weren't tough enough to earn the big points from a disciplined Tulane team."
In singles, Page and Joel Gamerov won their first set, but the match ended before the Toreros could earn a point. Tulane's 38th ranked Constantin Schmitz was the first to finish, outlasting Vittek, who owns a No. 55 national singles ranking, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Tulane's next point came from No. 4 where Schick defeated Koevermans 6-1, 6-2. They would clinch the match when No. 125 Ewan Moore beat Gui Osori 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
"The crowd was fantastic and really brought a lot of energy to the facility," Keckley explained. "We need to continue to believe in ourselves in the moments that can swing a match either direction. The opportunities present themselves each match, we just have to see red and go take it when they do."
The Toreros will face Iowa of the Big Ten Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in their final match of the San Diego Spring Break Tournament, the first of two straight matches against Big Ten opponents. USD hosts Wisconsin Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
