San Diego Falls to No. 31 Wisconsin

Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros fell to No. 31 Wisconsin, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon. The men lost the doubles point and were only able to pick up two wins in singles play.

"Today was tough to swallow," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "We played some of our better doubles and got off to a great start on every court. We were up early breaks on courts No. 2 and No. 3 and even served for the doubles point. The fact is, we need to take the bull by the horns when the opportunity is in front of us."

In doubles play, Filip Vittek and Joshua Page improved 12-5 overall against Josef Dodridge and Chema Carranza at the No. 1 position. The other two San Diego doubles pairs lost their matches against Wisconsin.

In singles play, at the No 1 spot, No. 70 Filip Vittek improved 15-6 in singles play. He defeated Wisconsin's No. 1 player, Lamar Remy 7-6, 6-2. This is Vittek's second singles win in a row. Also on a two match win streak, Gui Osorio downed Josef Dodridge 7-5, 7-5. Osorio improved 10-4 in the No. 2 position.

"We fought hard in singles but let some courts get away from us early on," said Coach Keckley. "We fought back after losing 4 of the 6 first sets, but it was just a bit too late. We need to find that spark early in matches and make it easier on ourselves.

Joshua Page, at the No. 3 position, fought hard against Wisconsin's Chama Carranza, but lost in the third set 6-1, 4-6, 7-6. At the No. 4 spot, Joel Gamerov lost to Osgar O'Hoisin 6-1, 6-3. Both Garrett Kurtz, on court six, and Guus Koevermans, on court five, lost their matches against the Badgers.

"We took a lot away from this match," said Coach Keckley. "We will use this experience to propel us in the right direction. We will be ready for a battle come Thursday against a very good Princeton team."

The Toreros play Princeton Thursday, March 23 at 11 a.m. at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
