SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The USD softball team (5-7) struggled offensively in the final day of the San Diego Classic, falling to Oregon State 7-0 and San Jose State 6-1 Sunday at the USD Softball Complex. Freshman pitcher Delaney Heller was excellent in relief, allowing no runs in 10.2 innings of work on the day.
Oregon State 7, San Diego 0 The Toreros managed just three hits against the Beavers, who are receiving votes in both national polls. Oregon State scored one in the first inning on a RBI single and put the game out of reach in the second inning when Lovie Lopez hit a grand slam that barely cleared the left field wall, giving the Beavers a 5-0 lead.
The Beavers would add two more in the fourth inning. The first came on a Mckenna Arriola double and the next on a RBI groundout.
The Toreros got two of their three hits in the third inning, but stranded both runners.
Megan Sabbatini (3-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Delaney Heller pitched the final 3.2 innings without allowing a run and just two hits.
Oregon State's Taylor Cotton (5-1) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out five and allowing three hits.

Torero starter Lauren Berriatua gave up six runs without recording an out, and USD never recovered despite an excellent performance from freshman Delaney Heller.
The Spartans began the game with four straight singles, a hit by pitch, and a two-RBI double. Heller then came in and retired three of the next four batters to end the inning. The Spartans wouldn't score again. The Toreros scored their lone run in the first inning when Lauren Kane drove home Olivia Sandusky with a triple down the right field line.
Heller pitched seven shutout innings in relief, giving up just five hits. For the weekend, she allowed one run in 18 innings pitched.
The Toreros return to action Wednesday when they host Detroit Mercy at 1:00 p.m.
